Mizuho Financial Group

Mizuho Financial Group, Inc (MHFG or Mizuho) is a Japanese financial company headquartered in Chiyoda, Tokyo. As a holding group Mizuho operates and manages its long-term credit banks, retail banks, specialized securities companies and other subsidiaries. Together, these bodies form Japan’s second largest financial group in terms of market capitalization. According to the Forbes Global 2000 rankings of August 2009, Mizuho is the 65th largest company in the world.

The group has over 50,000 employees working in a network of approximately 950 offices in Japan and around the world. Mizuho Bank offers the full range of banking and financial services to individual clients, small and medium-sized businesses, as well as corporate clients, including account management, payment and settlement services, deposits, and short and long term loans, among all.

The current President & CEO, appointed on Apr 1, 2009, is Takashi Tsukamoto. Mizuho is listed on Tokyo Stock Exchange, Osaka Securities Exchange, as well as on the New York Stock Exchange under the stock symbol MFG.

Initially established by the merger of the Industrial Bank of Japan, Fuji Bank, and Dai-Ichi Kangyo Bank in 2000, Mizuho Financial Group was formally founded in January 2003. The Group’s origins can be traced back to the second half of the 19th century when the private company Yasuda-ya (subsequently Fuji Bank), Dai-Ichi Bank, Nippon Kangyo Bank, as wells as the Industrial Bank of Japan were established. About a century later in 1971, the Dai-ichi Bank merged with Nippon Kangyo Bank and formed Dai-Ichi Kangyo Bank, Ltd. In 1999, DKB, Fuji, and IBJ announced their consolidation agreement, leading to the above- mentioned merger of 2000. As of 2002, Mizuho Holdings operates through its banks - Mizuho Bank and Mizuho Corporate Bank. A year later, the new Mizuho Financial Group exerts control over the operations of Mizuho Holdings.

Mizuho, through its subsidiaries, offers a wide range of banking and financial services and products in Japan and over the world. The Group’s business activities are organized in four divisions: Retail Group, Global Corporate Group, Global Asset & Wealth Management Group, and Strategy Affiliates. The Retail Group, via Mizuho Bank, Mizuho Capital, and Mizuho Investors Securities, provides offers financial products and services to more than 26 million Japanese households, 90,000 SMEs, and retail brokerage clients.

The Global Corporate Group offers banking and securities services and products to its corporate customers, both in and outside of Japan. The Global Asset & Wealth Management Group provides products and services in the field of trust, private wealth management, and asset management.

Mizuho Financial Strategy and Mizuho Information & Research Institute, within the Strategy Affiliates Division, are engaged in providing information, advisory services, and proposals in the areas of security, science, IT strategy, environment, and society.
